LISMORE City Council has won the Excellence in Road Safety Award for their innovative Drive To Conditions Project at the 2012 National Awards for Local Government ceremony held in Canberra last night. 

The Department of Infrastructure and Transport supported the Excellence in Road Safety category award was sponsored by the National Road Safety Council. 

Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport, Catherine King, and Federal Member for Page, Janelle Saffin, today congratulated Lismore City Council's win in the road safety award category which recognises innovative and unique initiatives that improve road safety in local communities.

"I would like to congratulate the Council on winning the Excellence in Road Safety award," Ms King said.

"The quality of this year's entrants was excellent and showcased the original and effective strategies that local councils are implementing to improve road safety in their area."

It is good to see local councils making road safety a priority and taking proactive steps toward reducing road fatalities and injuries that result from crashes," Ms Saffin said.

"I am also pleased to see our local councils actively contributing to our National Road Safety Strategy's four key areas - Safe Roads, Safe Speeds, Safe Vehicles and Safe People."

Lismore City Council's Drive to Conditions Project addressed major crash problems on the local road network through a range of measures, including complementary enforcement and education initiatives, targeted road improvements and removal of roadside hazards.
