LISMORE will be honouring exceptional citizens as well as welcoming 23 new Australians during the 2016 Australia Day Awards ceremony on Tuesday January 26.

The awards recognise outstanding contributions and achievements by individuals in the community in a variety of categories ranging from sports, arts and the environment to services in the community.

Lismore mayor Jenny Dowell will also welcome 23 new Australians in the annual Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony.

These residents come from countries as diverse as France, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Vietnam, Malaysia, United Kingdom, Brazil, India, Thailand and Canada.

"Our diversity as a community is what makes us so rich," Cr Dowell said.

"It is such a pleasure on Australia Day to give thanks to the people who make our city special and welcome those people who are now lucky enough to call this country home.

"As the Mayor of this city I feel so proud to present these awards and to celebrate the extraordinary community we have."

Cr Dowell will present the awards with 2016 Australia Day Ambassador, Liz Deep-Jones.

Ms Deep-Jones has a long list of credits to her name including television journalist and presenter, author, producer, broadcaster and public speaker.
