Lismore council played host to the city’s annual community Christmas Carols in South Lismore on Sunday, as a monster crowd celebrated the season.

Cars lined nearby streets for blocks as mums, dads, bubs, nans, pops, aunts, uncles, cousins, and teens converged on the green to enjoy one of the largest Christmas Carol gatherings the town has seen.

Lismore Christmas Carols have in the past been held at Hepburn Park in Goonellabah, Riverside Park, and at Oakes Oval.

Local face-painter Donna Spottygirl said the day was ‘super busy’ with her partner needing to apply sun screen while she was painting faces.

Luke Veronese said the turnout was bigger than he expected.

“There are a lot of families here, it’s great to see,” he said.

Relatives travelled from the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Coffs Harbour and Sydney to share the evening with loved ones.

Children enjoyed entertainment with local jumping castles, rock climbing, and sideshow clowns while foodtrucks dished out chips on a stick, gelatos, barbecues, and of course, coffee for the weary parent.

JD Smith from the Ten Tenors and Cosima De Vito, the powerhouse female vocalist who rose to fame on Australian Idol in 2004, encouraged the Christmas spirit.

Santa paid a visit to the enjoyment of the young and young at heart.

Mayor Steve Krieg said holding the event in South Lismore was significant for the community.

“This great community event will bring joy and happiness to an area of Lismore that was heavily affected by the February natural disaster and major March flood,” Mr Krieg said.

“We are really looking forward to seeing the smiles on people’s faces after what has been a tough year.”

The evening concluded with an unforgettable laser spectacular from the Lismore Workers Club.
