Lismore CBD smoking ban considered

LISMORE businesses are being asked to give their views on a smoking ban proposed by Lismore City Council for the busiest part of the city's central business district.

The Lismore Chamber of Commerce has launched its own survey to run alongside a community survey being done by the council canvassing residents' views.

Chamber vice chairman Jon Paterson said the business survey would close at the same time as the council's survey, which winds up at 4.30pm on Monday, March 12.

Mr Paterson encouraged residents to take part in the council survey and said any business that had not received a link to the chamber's survey should email [e-mail] to get one.

Lismore City Council already has smoking bans in place around children's playgrounds, the Memorial Baths, council work places, bus shelters, and outdoor dining areas.

The new proposal would extend that ban to cover the area known as "the block" - the central retail area running around Woodlark, Molesworth, Keen, and Magellan streets.

It would also ban smoking at council-owned or run playing fields, sports ground, and sports facilities as well as at any event run by or sponsored by the council.

Printed copies of the council survey can be found at the council's Corporate Centre, 43 Oliver Avenue, Goonellabah, and its Lismore CBD office, 55 Magellan Street. Completed surveys should be returned to those locations.
