Lane naming honour for Lismore businessman

A SOUTH Lismore laneway will be named today in honour of well-known and respected Lismore businessman Paul Jones.

Lismore mayor Jenny Dowell will dedicate 'Paul Jones Lane' in an official unveiling this morning.

The family of the late Mr Jones approached council to name the lane, which connects with Casino Street and marks the spot where Paul Jones Steelworks was established. 2012, marks what would have been Mr Jones' 80th birthday, as well as the 50th anniversary since he opened for business at eight Casino Street.

"It was my brother Philip who came up with the idea and we all agreed it would be such a fitting tribute as the lane was used for access to the workshop," Mr Jones' son Richard explained.

"We were thrilled when council said yes - it was a unanimous decision. Former councillor Peter Graham was actually a casual employee of dad's and he apparently retold that story in the council chambers and spoke in favour of the dedication. We're very pleased with the outcome."

Mr Jones was a well-respected businessman and community member in North and South Lismore from 1957 until his retirement in 1989.

His small business helped shape many buildings in the Lismore district including the 'Jack the Slasher' building (now The Tender Center) in Casino Street, the Lismore Skating Rink in Bridge Street, Richmond River High School, Kyogle Hospital and the former Summerland Drive-In movie theatre in Wollongbar.

He was also one of the first to develop light industrial sheds in Three Chain Road in the 1970s.

For almost 20 years Mr Jones volunteered as a coach and club president for Lismore Memorial Amateur Swimming Club. Within the Lismore RSL Club, Lismore Workers Club and Lismore Golf Club he held official positions and participated in many fundraising activities.

The House With No Steps and Life Saver Rescue Helicopter also benefited from his support and involvement in their organisations.

The late Paul Jones and his wife Dorothea had seven children - Louise, Paul, Christopher (dec.), Philip, Richard, Elizabeth and Simon.

Mrs Jones and her sons Paul, Philip, Richard and Simon will attend the laneway naming along with several of Mr and Mrs Jones' grandkids and former workshop staff.
