Kyogle Council has been forced to close a bridge on Wyndham Road after a main structural element failed.

Posting about the issue on Facebook, the council said the bridge was about 160m from the intersection with Eden Creek Road.

“A main structural element has failed, and the bridge is not deemed safe for traffic by any vehicle,” the post states.

“The bridge had carried a seven-tonne load limit.

“Pedestrian access remains available.

“No vehicular access is possible.

“The school bus operator has been advised and is contacting parents of students who travel this route.

“Emergency services have been advised.

“Alternative vehicle access for properties on Wyndham Road is available via Apple Gum Road.”

Local resident Margaret Williams posted a reply on the council’s Facebook page.

“Our lovely old bridge has been ailing for some time,” she wrote.

“I’m glad no-one has been hurt with the final collapse.

“I hope it won’t be long before it is replaced.

“The council has been doing some bridge work and it is so important because when the bridge is out people have to drive long distances alternatively.

“Thank you Kyogle Council for using your money wisely.”

It is not known when the bridge on Wyndham Road will be fixed or replaced.
