An innovative use of empty storefronts in a Northern Rivers village is bringing Christmas cheer with a community art exhibition showcasing 27 local artists.
Organised and hosted by Arts Kyogle, the exhibition will also provide an opportunity for the community to connect with the art group formerly known as the Kyogle and District Arts Council.
Artworks from Kyogle-based artists will be on display and available for purchase inside the old IGA display window as well as the vacant shop at 131 Summerland Way until January 11.
“A community exhibition used to be put up in the Roxy gallery every December so any artist that wasn’t large enough to have their own had an opportunity to exhibit and sell their works,” Arts Kyogle Inc Lindy Worgan said.
After struggling to have the Roxy gallery in Kyogle for the last three years, the newly formed Arts Kyogle Inc. have decided to put on the annual exhibition themselves.
“We managed to get one of the larger windows of the old IGA building and the council have let us have their empty, unused shopfront down under the Roxy Gallery.”
Ms Worgan said there are works from 27 local artists spread out between these two locations.
More than 12 works have already been sold since the exhibition opened last week.
“We’ve had a man come up from Ballina to do their Christmas shopping because they love all the art here.”
Artists works on exhibition include textiles, paintings, sculptures, and watercolours.
“We’ve got a sculpture by Clunes artist Trevor Thomas … we have a $2700 wooden rocking horse that is strong enough to hold an adult, on display,” Ms Worgan said.
With ten metres of street front window space up the southern end of the old IGA building, works have been displayed on stands, hung on walls, and sculptures are on the floors.
Kyogle Mayor Cr Danielle Mulholland said the exhibition was an exciting new initiative which would bring colour and vibrancy to Kyogle’s CBD throughout the festive season.
“It also gives people the chance to buy some wonderful art and provides a means for our incredibly talented local artists to sell some of their work,” she said.
“It’s a win-win for all involved.”
“This is a great collaboration which will showcase our artists and their work and raise awareness in the community of Arts Kyogle, the work they are doing what they hope to achieve,” Cr Janet Wilson said.
The artworks can be viewed any time through the IGA window, with people able to buy artworks on display by attending the vacant shop. The shop will open on Wednesday to Saturday from 10am to 2pm, with the possibility of remaining open for late night shopping.
