Kevin Wilson: Casino man sentenced for kicking ex-girlfriend after break-up

A man who unleashed a violent kick at his former lover when she was looking away, then drove off as she lay crying on a footpath, has been sentenced for the “serious” domestic violence.

A man who kicked his ex-girlfriend in the back and threatened to burn her belongings in a post break-up blue has been convicted.

Kevin James Wilson, 21, was sentenced on Thursday for assault – domestic violence related and intentionally breaching an apprehended violence order.

Court documents state the victim was parked near Coronation Park about 12pm on September 4 waiting for Wilson to arrive and return her bank card, following their break-up the night before.

When Wilson arrived, an argument started over property they still had of each other which led the 21-year-old man to say, “I’ll burn all your stuff”.

He then kicked the woman – who had turned away from him – in the back and knocked her to the pavement before driving away.

The attack was witnessed by a stranger, with police later arriving at the park to find the victim crying and holding her left side. About 90 minutes later, Wilson was arrested at his home.

Before officers could talk to him about the allegations, Wilson said “I know why you’re here, I didn’t do anything”, court documents state.

When police told Wilson there was a witness, he said: “I went there because we agreed to exchange her cards for my clothes in her car, but when I got there she refused and she ran at me with her fist raised. Did your witness see that?”

Magistrate Kathy Crittenden said Wilson’s offending was “a very serious act of (domestic) violence”, noting the assault was aggravated by the breach of an apprehended violence order (AVO) taken out to protect the victim.

The court heard the victim had experienced “significant harm” as a result.

In light of Wilson’s age and lack of violent criminal history, he was convicted and sentenced to a 12-month community corrections order.
