EVERYONE loves Tip Free Day - and why not?

It's a chance to clean out garages, backyards and cupboards and dump old junk absolutely free.

The next Tip Free Day is this Sunday, November 18.

Of course, the downside of Tip Free Day is there can be waiting times with so many people keen to get rid of rubbish for free.

The solution? Come very early or very late, says Lismore City Council's waste operations coordinator Kevin Trustum.

"Everyone ends up coming smack bang in the middle of the day and then we get delays," Kevin said.
"If you plan ahead and pack your trailer the day before, you can come first thing and you'll have less time to wait and the rest of the day to enjoy.

"Alternatively, you could spend Sunday loading up your trailer and bring it to the tip late in the afternoon when the rush is almost over.

"It spreads out the work for the tip staff and it means you have less time sitting in the car playing Eye Spy."

Mr Trustum also reminded people that Tip Free Day is the perfect time to dispose of old TVs.

With analogue signals being switched off on November 27, many people have old TVs they want to get rid of.
Lismore mayor Jenny Dowell heard reports of TVs being dumped a few weeks ago and urged people to take advantage of Tip Free Day instead of illegally dumping them.

"Council can ensure the TV's valuable components and resources can be separated for re-use," Mayor Dowell said.

"It's terrible if council workers have to spend their time retrieving old TVs from roadsides and bushland. We encourage everyone to be responsible."

Anyone in the electorate can take part in Tip Free Day - there are just a few simple rules.

"For starters, bring along your rates notice or licence to show you live in the Lismore City Council area and you qualify," Mr Trustum said.

"To help us divert waste from landfill please keep scrap metal, timber, green waste, household items and other recyclables separate.

"Also, no commercial quantities of chemicals, no asbestos and no truck/tractor tyres will be allowed into the tip on the day, and no more than 12 car tyres will be allowed in one load."

Tip Free Day is on Sunday, November 18 from 9am to 4pm.
