LISMORE rescue workers had their work cut out for them on Monday saving a bewildered bovine from certain drowning.

Authorities were alerted to the cow's dilema after she was spotted stuck-in-the-mud on the banks of Leycester Creek by a passing canoeist.

After pooling their knowledge and resources, police, Lismore City Council and SES workers pulled off a daring rescue, saving the animal.

Council ranger Joe Monks said it was an unusual call-out but everyone was happy to work together to get the "damsel in distress" back to safety.

"The SES crew arrived with their boat and had to get into the water to wrap a strap around the cow's neck and tow her out into the middle of creek," Mr Monks said.

"She even rolled over at one stage and we thought we'd lost her but she came up with her head up and started to swim.

"While all this was happening our cow remained surprisingly calm and cooperative and seemed to know that we were trying to help her."
