The Ballina St Bridge was officially opened on September 7, 1963, ending discussion started in the 1930s about the need for another river crossing from South Lismore to the Lismore CBD.
The bridge across the Richmond River - since re-named Wilsons River - was built to relieve the congestion on the existing crossing near the Winsome Hotel.
It cost £460,000 to build and was opened at the same time as the Robert White Bridge.
The project was built by the Department of Main Roads, Lismore City Council, and the Public Works Department.
The bridge is currently receiving a $5 million makeover to protect it from corrosion.
