Heroin, ice and 183 Kg of cannabis busted on Pacific Highway near Byron Bay

A 20-year-old man was charged after the drugs were seized from the vehicle he was driving near Byron Bay.

A 20-year-old man was refused bail on Wednesday after more than $2 million worth of cannabis, heroin and methylamphetamine was seized during a vehicle stop on the state’s far north coast.

Officers attached to Byron Bay Traffic & Highway Patrol were conducting a routine patrol on the Pacific Highway, Tyagarah, about 16km north of Byron Bay, when they stopped a medium rigid truck due to the manner of driving.

The vehicle was travelling north, towards the Queensland border.

Police approached the vehicle and spoke to the driver, a 20-year-old man.

When police checked the rear of the vehicle to ensure the load was properly secured, they allegedly located an amount of cannabis.

Officers, with assistance from Northern Rivers Region Enforcement Squad (RES), conducted a search of the vehicle and allegedly located and seized approximately 183kg of cannabis in vacuum sealed bags, 2.5kg of methylamphetamine in plastic resealable bags and 816gm of heroin in a compressed block in the rear of the vehicle.

The estimated potential street value of the drugs was in excess of two million dollars.

The man was arrested and taken to Byron Bay Police Station, where he was charged with two counts of supply prohibited drug large commercial quantity and one count of supply prohibited drug commercial quantity.

The Cabramatta man was refused bail and will face Tweed Heads Local Court again on Friday, October 15.

The man did no enter pleas to the charges.

Police confirmed that inquiries in regards to this matter continue.
