EMPLOYERS and job seekers in the Northern Rivers have a new opportunity to match vacant jobs to skills thanks to an initiative jointly supported by Lismore City Council, Telstra, the Australian Government and the NSW Government.

Lismore MP Thomas George said employers and job seekers are being invited to attend the Telstra Lismore Jobs Market on Friday October 19, between 11.30am and 2pm at the Goonellabah Sport and Aquatic Centre in Lismore.

"The Telstra Lismore Jobs Market provides a great opportunity for job seekers in the region to meet with employers and agencies with vacancies that may match their skills," Mr George said.

"Job seekers can attend for free and meet face to face with employers or agencies to discuss opportunities for employment.

"The Telstra Lismore Jobs Market is part of a broader response by the NSW Government in collaboration with relevant Local, State and Commonwealth agencies to provide support to employees affected by the closure of the Goonellabah Telstra Call Centre.

"The NSW Government last month organised an information forum for employees affected by the closure, and has also appointed a dedicated officer funded through the Department of Education & Communities - State Training Services' Regional Training & Employment Strategy program to assist affected employees at the Goonellabah site.

"Martyn Mills has been appointed to provide dedicated support to affected employees until the end of October and will work closely with employees, Telstra representatives and a range of government agencies and organisations to assist retrenched staff to find alternative work."

Mr George said employers can still register to use free exhibition space to meet with prospective employees at the Telstra Lismore Jobs Market on October 19.

"Employers can also register their current job vacancies online at or by calling the hotline 02 6686 3972," Mr George said.

"The 19 October event is open to Telstra employees and also to all job seekers in the region."
