THE Greens are hoping to put cycleways on the local government election agenda by organising a mass ride around Lismore's CBD tomorrow.

Lismore City Council candidate and bike ride coordinator Adam Guise said The Greens were the only party running with a "clear vision and plan" for the extension of cycleways around the Lismore LGA.

"We need to make a commitment to cycleways and ensure their funding in future years to grow the infrastructure," he said.

Organisers have called on riders to bring bells and whistles for the ride.

Mr Guise said community input into the 2011 Cycleway Plan indicated the need for a suitable and safe link between the lower CBD area and the higher residential area of Lismore Heights and beyond, adding that Lismore needed an effective cycleway plan if it was to keep up with the region's "environmentally friendly image and the changing global trends toward cleaner transportation methods".

He said The Greens policy included marking of dedicated cycle lanes; widening of footpaths to allow for shared cycle/pedestrian access; and signage to indicate shared paths/cycleways adding that future housing developments must integrate cycleways into design for cost effective commuter routes and recreational cycling areas.

Bike riders will assemble at The Greens shopfront in Magellan St Lismore at 10am tomorrow.

The route will take riders around the city block via Molesworth, Woodlark and Keens Streets and back to Magellan.
