A bumper crowd braved the heat in their finest get up for the “jewel” of Northern Rivers racing – the popular Lismore Cup.

No longer a half-day holiday, organisers of the regional city’s premier racing day on Thursday sold about 500 tickets to the Stone and Wood VIP enclosure alone before the event began.

About 20 trackside tables filled up fast as punters shielded from the sun under large umbrellas.

In total, eight races went ahead in 34C heat, forcing the club to enact its hot weather policy.

Precautions included ensuring ready access to water and sprinklers set up to keep punters and horses cool.

On Thursday, a strong field was lured by a total prize pool of $75,000 for the Big Dance Eligibility Metroll Lismore Cup – the 2110m race run under handicap conditions.

Winner Full Press, trained by Brett Dodson, and 2nd place getter Without Revenge, trained by David Vandyke both qualified to enter the $3 million Big Dance race at Royal Randwick in Sydney on November 7.

Jenny Pryde from Eltham said it was great to be back at the Cup even if it was just a “bit hot”.

“I’m having a lovely time,” she said.

A first for the event in 2023 was the “after the last” party, held after the final sprint.

It allowed attendees who had to work through the day to still enjoy the festivities.

An affair to remember, the 2023 Lismore Cup was a welcome distraction for some as they continue to recover from the 2022 floods.
