Free job market for jobseekers

LISMORE Mayor Jenny Dowell is urging job seekers to take advantage of the Telstra Lismore Jobs Market this Friday where more than 200 jobs will be listed.

LISMORE Mayor Jenny Dowell is urging job seekers across the electorate to take advantage of the Telstra Lismore Jobs Market this Friday, October 19 where there will be more than 200 jobs listed.

While the Jobs Market was set up to try and find employment for the 116 staff affected by the closure of Telstra's Goonellabah Call Centre, the day will be open to all job seekers from 11.30am.

It's not too late for employers to register for a free exhibition space and gain access to a large pool of skilled and committed workers.

Cr Dowell said the announcement the call centre would close on October 23 came as a shock to many. However, she said the Jobs Market presented a valuable chance for workers to meet prospective employers.

Cr Dowell said it was important for employers to recognise that call centre staff had a wide range of skills and attributes that were transferrable to many different industries and roles.

"We have a really dedicated, skilled workforce of local people and the priority is to find jobs for them," Cr Dowell said.

"This could be a lifeline for affected staff and we strongly urge people to attend and get the most from this opportunity."

The event will be sponsored by Telstra in association with the Australian Government's Building Australia's Future Workforce Program, NSW Trade & Investment and Lismore City Council.

The Jobs Market allows employers to hand out information about their businesses, collect resumes, and potentially shortlist candidates to interview. Employers who cannot attend the Jobs Market can still post details of vacancies on the Telstra Lismore Jobs Board.

To register as an exhibitor at the Telstra Lismore Jobs Market, employers should phone 6686 3972 or visit www.telstralismorejobsmarket.com.au.

The Telstra Lismore Jobs Market is on Friday, October 19 at the Goonellabah Sports and Aquatic Centre and is open to all job seekers from 11.30am to 2pm. Entry is free.
