Floodwaters begin to recede in higher catchments

AS FLOODWATERS move down the Richmond and Wilsons rivers about 2000 people remain isolated in the region.

SES Richmond Tweed region planning officer Kerith Cameron said minor to moderate flooding was impacting around Lismore this morning as the SES turn their attention to areas around Coraki.

"Over the course of last night the rain and the wind eased significantly which allowed our crews to get out and attend to requests for assistance," she said.

"The focus now is downstream in area around Coraki where we expect minor flooding.

"We are expecting the peak to come through Coraki later this afternoon.

"It's not major flooding the main concern at this stage looks like some minor rural flooding that we will be monitoring and responding to accordingly."

Ms Cameron said the numbers of people isolated was currently about 2000 but that figure was predicted to rise throughout the morning.

"There are significant isolations across the rural areas in the Richmond Tweed region," he said.

"There are 800 or 900 people still isolated around Tabulam and there would be possible similar numbers around Uki."

Meanwhile, Lismore City Council has announced a free green waste drop-off at the Lismore tip from Wednesday through to Sunday.
