It may still be winter, but dry fuel and strong winds mean firefighters are at the scene of a bushfire on the Summerland Way.
NSW Rural Fire Service Inspector Daniel Ainsworth said the fire was on the Summerland Way at Sherwood, between Woodenbong and Unumgar.
“The Rural Fire Service has two crews, one from Woodenbong and one from Kyogle there bringing it under control,” he said.
“The winds on the tablelands are much stronger than in other places and this has helped push the fire along.”
Mr Ainsworth said the Summerland Way was still open, but urged drivers to take care and allow for extra travel time.
The cause of the bushfire is not yet known.
On its website the RFS said that recent rain meant more grass growth.
“As it dries out, the risk of dangerous grass fires increases,” the RFS said.
“Grass fires are unpredictable. They can start easily and spread quickly.”
