A FIRE broke out at an abandoned property in Winton Lane, Ballina, just before 3pm yesterday.

The blaze started in the shed behind the house, where squatters may have been staying.

It is believed neighbours called Triple-0 after seeing smoke and flames.

NSW Fire Brigade crews arrived to extinguish the fire and managed to contain the damage to the shed.

It is not known how the fire started, but nearby residents are calling for both the house and the shed to be demolished.

“No-one has lived there for years,” one woman said.

“It should just be knocked down so something else can be built.”
