UPDATE 9.30am: Fire crews at a house fire near The Channon early Saturday morning said fire fighting efforts were hampered by lack of access to water.

Station Officer Ian Grimwood attended the fire with Lismore Fire & Rescue, and said the crews struggled to access water from a water tank on the property.

“We were the first to arrive just after midnight on Friday about 30 minutes after we were called to attend,” he said.

“On arrival we spoke to a neighbour, but there was no-one at the burning property we knew of.

“The fire at the property was fully involved so we undertook exposure protection of the neighbouring property,” he said.

“This comprised of us putting a water curtain between the two buildings as our primary was to project the neighbouring property.”

He said two key concerns at the fire were two LPG cylinders impacted by the fire and a lack of water.

Mr Grimwood said shortly after the Lismore Fire & Rescue alpha pumper arrived, the Rural Fire Service was on scene.

“The RFS used pumps to access water from a tank at the property,” he said.

“One lesson from this is that all rural property residents should have fittings on their water tanks to allow firefighters to access water when needed.

“And people should also consider joining the Static Water Supply Program which allows firefighters to know where water can be accessed.”

Mr Grimwood said his crew were released at 1.30am and were back at Lismore Fire Station at 2am on Saturday.
