POLICE Officer Dave Alley will strap on his sneakers and take off from Lismore on his marathon record attempt around Australia this Sunday.

Lismore City Council is holding a family fun day at Oakes Oval to wish Dave well on his epic 14,000km journey, called Race Around Australia 2, which will end back in Lismore almost six months later.

Dave is on a mission to raise money for the White Cloud Foundation and those living with depression, and hopes to become the fastest man to run around the country, breaking Pat Farmer's 1999 record of 191 days, Council's Tourism and Events Manager Mitch Lowe explained.

"Dave's determination and selflessness is inspiring - and we are really honoured he chose Lismore as the start and finish line for his mammoth record attempt," Mr Lowe said.

"We are holding a free community event with lots of activities for children to farewell him this Sunday. It will be colourful and fun, and will ensure Dave leaves on his journey feeling supported and motivated.

"He has already done countless hours of gruelling training and now has six months of running ahead of him. It is an enormous feat of physical endurance and willpower - the least we can do is send him off in style!"

The family fun day will run from 7am to 10am with a sausage sizzle and coffee van, jumping castle, free face painting, an art area for kids with mask making and other activities, clowns, balloon twisting, magic tricks and an active kids area with sack races, egg and spoon races, totem tennis and much more.

The community event to farewell Dave Alley on Race Around Australia 2 is at Oakes Oval this Sunday, April 19 from 7am to 10am.
