ONE Lismore resident likes to mix a bit of Japanese inspiration, a long love of textiles and an eye for beautiful fabrics together to create a one-of-a-kind fabric lovers’ paradise.
With 25 years of quilting experience, Jane MacDonald knows what’s what when it comes to fabric and crafts and it shows at her home-based fabric shop and through her Japanese textiles teaching.
Ms MacDonald first started off making miniature quilts for her daughter’s dolls, which has since blossomed into Be Be Bold, her home-grown business that specialises in Japanese fabrics, patterns and textiles.
“I have been interested in textiles ever since I was young, but I like Japanese textiles in particular because the fabrics have beautiful patterns, designs and great quality,” Ms MacDonald said.
“I like to be able to make something that is simple and beautiful into something special as you go along.
“I started off making quilts and I have progressed to garments, bags, furnishings and Japanese lucky owls, which are soft ornaments.”
The 51-year-old operates from her home in Elton Street, but her crafty business has taken her to Japan where she was influenced to adopt Sashiko, a Japanese style of stitching and embroidery.
Although she no longer makes quilts to order, Ms MacDonald holds a few favourite quilting memories.
“I think the log cabins quilt is my favourite as it is simple and a show of fabrics,” she said. “I like great traditional designs in particular, but I create lots of designs myself that are inspired by many different things.”
Aside from her buying and selling, Ms MacDonald’s role as a teacher will take her to Adelaide and Melbourne, where one person will be flying in from Singapore for a lesson.
