TWO examples of the region’s musical expertise have left home territory to seek international praise and inspiration for up-and-coming projects.
Local hardcore band Parkway Drive has risen from a garage in Byron Bay on to the international rock scene, while Lismore-born-and-bred composer Colin Black is continuing to ride his wave of success all the way to Europe.
Mr Black, who is a Southern Cross University contemporary music graduate, recently completed working on his new sound composition, Kilian’s Antipodean Dream, which will be premiered in two parts on a German national radio broadcaster on May 21 and May 28.
Kilian (1811-1884) was a German Lutheran pastor.
Mr Black has previously worked with the Northern Rivers Performing Arts on a production called The Flood and gained inspiration for his current composition by flying straight to the source.
“I went to Germany last year, taking a few months off composing the works in the studio and went around East Germany,” he said.
“The inspiration for this project came from the idea of Kilian and his ability to stand up for his beliefs against all odds.
“I found the landscape and culture in Germany similar to what Lismore used to be like. There is a lot of dairy farming and similar qualities I found in their community.”
Mr Black is currently a PhD candidate for the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and said he would ‘love to make a piece about the Lismore area’.
A band that got its name from practising in a garage in Parkway Drive at Byron Bay, it will release its third album next month.
Vocalist Winston McCall is very confident about the next album and hopes its musical variety of rhythmic pop punk and ear-deafening metal rock will please eager fans.
“It’s definitely the Parkway record I’m most proud of,” he said.
The album will be released on June 25.
