The Teven Road oil spill resulted in a minor accident just before 6am, with Lismore police attending the scene. It is understood no one was injured in the crash.

Police were notified of the diesel spill, which started in Goonellabah and continued down Rotary Drive, by passing motorists concerned about the road conditions.

Richmond Local Area Command duty officer, Insp Scott Bingham, said it was lucky there were no accidents.

“The diesel stretched for quite a long way, from Goonellabah down to Lismore,” he said.

“There weren’t any accidents, but obviously people were worried about it because the road was also quite slippery from the little bit of rain we’ve had.

“At this stage we’re not sure where the fuel came from.

“But we’re guessing a truck had a bit of a leak or something.

“We’re looking into it.”

Insp Bingham said the diesel was completely cleaned up by about 9.30am.

Fire crews were also called to clean up the oil spill on Teven Road.

Police are still urging drivers to take care at the spillage locations, as the roads could remain quite slippery.
