FACEBOOK users were 'biking up the wrong tree' when they concluded Lismore's recycled Christmas tree would end up in landfill.

Just because the up-cycled Christmas tree is now temporarily residing at the tip (pictured), doesn't mean that's its final resting place.

Lismore City Council stated: "The tree will be stored until its next silly season appearance, perhaps in Lismore or perhaps somewhere else. We're looking at ideas for how it can be used in the future but it belongs to the community and we promise to bring it back again!

"We were overwhelmed by people's love and enthusiasm for the tree, and we would like to thank the staff who dreamed up the idea and those who painted, welded and craned it into position.

"To the community: we'e so glad you liked your Chrissie gift. It made us so happy to know you liked it, and we'd love to do more things like this in the future - things that demonstrate what a unique community we are, but don't cost the Earth. Reusing and recycling is something this city is becoming known for and we want to build on that reputation of sustainability with clever thinking and ingenuity.
