Long-awaited plans for a service centre on the Pacific Highway at New Italy are currently on public exhibition through Richmond Valley Council.

The $14.7 million project includes a 24-hour service centre with 10 double-sided fuel pumps, five bay electric vehicles charging area, impressive facilities for truckies and four separate eateries, including two with drive-throughs.

While the volunteers at New Italy Museum have welcomed the proposed development, there have been some concerns from local residents.

That’s why the organisation has decided to host a meeting at the New Italy Community Hall at 11am on Sunday, August 8.

Museum president, Gail Williams, said the purpose of the meeting was to enable members of the New Italy community to ask questions about the recently lodged development application.

She said representatives of the developer will attend via video-link from Sydney to answer questions from the community.

“There are many elements of the DA that our community may not fully appreciate,” Ms Williams said.

“The meeting will provide an opportunity to have those elements explained to them by the persons who prepared and lodged the DA.

“Community members will then be better informed if they wish to lodge a submission on the DA with the Richmond Valley Council by the deadline of August 16.”

Museum secretary/treasurer Peter Blackwood said there were only a limited number of seats in the hall and people can reserve their spot.

Residents can also submit questions to the developer by emailing info@newitaly.org.au, or

sending a text from 0414 673 933.

Anyone who attends the information session must comply with Covid-19 rules, including remaining seated, social distancing, and logging in with the QR code.
