Defending champ Lampe hopes to shine again in Bay triathlon

DEFENDING champion Joseph Lampe is among the surge of entries who have registered for the Byron Bay triathlon in the last month.

DEFENDING champion Joseph Lampe is among the surge of entries who have registered for the Byron Bay triathlon in the last month.

Lampe is from Lennox Head and has won the event on two occasions.

Entries are close to 1000 and expected to reach 1600 leading into May.

There has been over 500 people enter the popular race since January.

"We'll get close to our capacity of 1700," event manager Sebastian Krantz said.

A new sprint distance race has been added to the 2014 event.

It will be held over two days on May 10 and 11 with most of the competition events on Saturday.

The feature race is the individual 1.5km swim, 40km bike ride and 10 km run.

It is usually the last race of the season on the NSW and Queensland calendar.

Smaller races for kids from the ages of 7-15 years will also be held.

They are aquathon races with short distance run, swim, runs.
