Crowning event for Beef Week

THE Beef Week Queen candidates were brushing up on their agricultural knowledge, practising their public speaking skills and att-empting to calm their nerves in the lead-up to tonight’s crowning.
As part of the annual Casino event, eager local girls enter the Beef Week Queen competition in an attempt to win the crown for the year.
Five entrants will be judged tonight at Beef Week’s official opening at the Casino RSM Club, including 19-year-old Claire Carey, of Casino.
“I have been finding out information on my breed (Hereford) and researching the history of Casino,” she said.
“I have been studying pretty hard, but I am not really in it to win it.
“I just want the experience to meet new people and learn about beef cattle.”
The Casino TAFE student has had some insider tips and encouragement from last year’s Beef Week Queen, Kassandra Whitney, who told Claire not to be scared and ‘to be herself’.
“I am friends with Kassandra and I picked the same breed as her, so she has given me some advice,” Claire said.
Each entrant is required to pick a breed of cattle and learn as much as possible about that breed before they are put in front of the panel.
Aside from the prestigious crown, the winner gets an all expenses paid trip for two to Sydney.
The new Queen also becomes Beef Week’s official ambassador at most of the week’s events, including presenting various prizes.
Casino Beef Week president Stuart George said the Queen competition gave the girls a big self-confidence boost.
“It has been an event that has been staged with Beef Week ever since it started 28 years ago,” he said.
“It gives the entrants self-confidence and a chance for bonding.
“Every year a lot of girls approach us about the event. It is very popular.”
The entrants are judged on their general, agricultural and beef industry knowledge, public speaking skills, personality and the way they present themselves.
The ‘official opening’ of Beef Week tonight marks the start of the event, which runs between until June 1.
