FROM skateboarding prawns to a 30m-high Ferris wheel, the Ballina Prawn Festival has it all this year.
For the first time the Fair Go Skate Competition will feature alongside regular favourites such as the Ballina Fishermen's Co-op prawn shelling competition, raft races, sandcastle building, boat parade, fireworks and Macadamia Castle animal displays.
The skate competition, Australia's longest-running skate competition, will be an opportunity for the broader community to witness some of the incredible talent on show.
With registrations opening at 9am, the event kicks off at 11am and there are categories for under 10s through to open and sponsored skaters. You might even see festival mascot PJ Prawn dropping in to the skate bowl.
The prawn festival, held at Missingham Park, begins at 9am with the Ballina Fair shopping centre's grand street parade and continues through the day with music, markets and food, ending with the fireworks display at night.
Festival organisers are hoping the added events will help the festival to become even more successful.
"We love that people really get out there and have such a great time at events," organiser Nadia Eliott Burgess said.
"So we have made sure that the 2015 Ballina Prawn Festival will be even quirkier, with plenty of ways for people to get involved and a whole lot of fun for everyone."
Parking will be available at the Kingsford Smith football fields for $2 and a shuttle service available for disabled and elderly people from the carpark to the festival.
Kingsford Smith Dr will be closed for the duration of Saturday's festival.
