Future of Lake pool murky

MORE than a year after the controversial closure of the Lismore Lake pool, questions are being asked about the regeneration of the lake precinct.

MORE than a year after the controversial closure of the Lismore Lake pool, questions are being asked about the regeneration of the lake precinct.

Visitors to The Northern Star's Facebook page have bemoaned the lack of attention given to the lake and pool site.

"Why don't the council get Lismore Lake back into some sort of order?" commented Sam Davo on The Northern Star's Facebook page. "It's a disgrace as the airport is right next door. Thumbs down!"

Lismore City Council confirmed the area around the lake is being maintained but that does not include a sizeable section of the lake shoreline that is wildlife habitat.

The future of the empty pool, now holding stagnant rainwater, is under council consideration. A submission is being prepared for next financial year's budget to remove the existing pool structure and have the site made fit for recreational use.

Ross Davies the council's co-ordinator of contracts and property services, said that the council has negotiated a licence with Lismore Lake Holiday Park to maintain the area around the pool and its structures such as toilets.

Owner of the caravan park Chris Crowe is determined to improve the site, as it is an entrance to his business.

"I really want to make the area more attractive. I've agreed with council to maintain the area at my cost, but I can't do anything commercial," Mr Crowe said.

"Council will remove the old pump shed. I will make the amenity block serviceable, clean up the tables and chairs and re-roof the shelters."

Councillor Vanessa Ekins pointed out that the Lismore Lake area is an entry to Lismore for eastbound motorists on the Bruxner Hwy and thought should be given to the city's entrances.

"We could really make something of the park. Threatened species of birds visit the lake. I'd like to see a focus on vegetation around the lake which would give protection to the birds," Cr Ekins said.
