THE Demon Barber of Fleet Street has made an appearance in the front window of Joel's Salon de Men this Carnival of Flowers.
Taking part in this year's Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce Carnival in the CBD competition, a number of local businesses have beautified their shopfronts to celebrate the iconic event.
Salon owners Joel and Susan Watson have done something to celebrate carnival every year for the last 12.
"We've always done it because people make the effort to come up here to visit the gardens and carnival, all of that, and we should all just be community-minded and put in the effort," she said.
"And I've just enjoyed doing this little thing for fun."
The display is a macabre mix of native flowers and Victorian-era melodrama.
The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, better known through Tim Burton's 2007 rendition starring Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd, is the story of the 19th century barber who murders his customers with a straight razor and turns their bodies over to his wife, who bakes their flesh into meat pies.
"Hence the meat pies," Mrs Watson said, pointing to the display.
She said one of her clients helped piece together the antiques and bits and pieces for the display, while Pizza Pie and Co baked the pies, which are filled with cotton wool and not human flesh.
Other businesses like Cracker Printing, Superior Signs, and Natalie's Floral Art also helped out with the display.
"It's a bit of fun," Mrs Watson said.
Chamber CEO Todd Rohl said the Toowoomba Chamber was rebooting the carnival of CBD windows concept as a way to increase foot traffic in the CBD during the Carnival of Flowers.
"The idea stems from concerns raised by CBD traders about declining foot traffic in the CBD an outcome of the CBD Revitalisation Advisory Committee, consultation with local businesses," he said.
"We are hopeful the idea will increase foot traffic and excitement in the city centre and compliment what has already been planned for the Carnival of Flowers."
