THE finished product of two years' work was revealed yesterday as the new and improved Lismore Visitor Information Centre was unveiled.
The $120,000 redevelopment has been completed and the staff are pleased with their new quarters, said Lismore City Council tourism services co-ordinator Mitch Lowe.
"We had input from close to 50 community members and groups. Just collecting the photos alone - there are literally hundreds featured on the panels and lightboxes - was a mammoth task," Mr Lowe said.
"The result is beyond what we could have imagined."
As well as a magnificent upgrade of the old and "tired" indoor rainforest, which now stands as a beautiful interactive display with all new creatures and colourful features for kids and adults to enjoy, there's also some new stuff on show, Mr Lowe said.
The building features new lightboxes and interpretative panels filled with a spectacular array of photographs and stories depicting Lismore's history, Aboriginal culture and local environment.
Mr Lowe said these panels weren't only there as an intriguing display for visitors, but just as importantly to provide some interesting facts to community members such as school children.
Mr Lowe said the new information centre is all about motivation - "encouraging people to go out and visit different sites and adventure opportunities" that exist in our area.
He said that went for long-term residents, too, who can find out new ways to "explore their own backyard".
Another feature is the Aboriginal gallery, rotating artworks for Bundjalung artists and currently displaying the works of world-
renowned artist Digby
Moran.
