Hard work and leadership beyond her years has paid off for an Alstonville teen in the running for NSW’s best school-based apprentice of the year.

Chelsea McInnes, 17, is one of three young guns in the state being recognised for her drive in the kitchen at The Trident Fish & Grill.

Chelsea completed a Certificate II in hospitality as part of a school-based traineeship at Alstonville High School but said she “only knew basic customer service” before starting at the Main St business.

Now, she’s a natural in the kitchen as a short-order cook, front of house team manager and junior staff trainer.

Chelsea said she entered the workforce at 14 to support her single income mum.

“Facing challenges together as a family taught me life lessons that have made me stronger,” she said.

“I learnt that hard work and earning an income would make life easier.

She said nothing was too hard if it involved supporting her mum.

“I carry the same work ethic into my adult life.”

Employer Christian Photiou said Chelsea’s love of the hospitality shone brightly.

“Never in my many years of business have I had an employee who is confident and eager to represent the hospitality industry as Chelsea does,” he said.

“She’s a born leader who builds a positive workplace culture.”

He said those traits were rarely seen, even in employees much older than her.

“I know when Chelsea is working in the kitchen as she presents food at a higher standard and the kitchen flows smoothly and efficiently.”

Chelsea also volunteers for her school’s fundraising committee, is Alstonville High School’s house sports captain and runs the school’s breakfast club, providing free breakfast for those who go without.

“My (school-based traineeship) was the best career move,” she said.

“If you’re looking for a way to have it all – your HSC, extra qualifications and paid work, I highly recommend it. “

She also encouraged employers to think about giving a school student a job.

“I believe we have a lot to learn from each other,” she said.

The winners of the people’s choice awards will be announced on October 9.
