Casino Library and three others in the region will be getting a much needed upgrade through government funding

There’s a whole list of things going to be upgraded at the Casino Community Library, including a modern entrance and exterior to create a welcoming atmosphere.

Casino Library is all set for immediate major upgrades thanks to a near half million dollar cash injection for North Coast libraries.

Clarence MP Chris Gulaptis said the library will be one of four in the region to be upgraded, including three Lower Clarence area.

“In the Richmond Valley, our partnership with Council literally continues: last year we delivered a major expansion of Evans Head Library and this year it is Casino’s turn,” Mr Gulaptis said.

The $192,000 grant to Casino Library will see the realisation of the Casino Community Library Courtyard project, including a modern entrance and exterior to create a welcoming atmosphere, a 20 per cent increase in floor space and new informal, relaxed reading areas.

Richmond Valley Mayor Robert Mustow said he was thrilled to see more improvements getting underway at the Casino Library.

“The Casino Library has gone from strength to strength in recent years, with a host of upgrades and improvements introduced for its growing membership,” Cr Mustow said.

“The community loves this facility and it is a vital part of cultural life in Casino. I’m looking forward to trying the new outdoor reading space – and sampling some bush tucker too.”

Clarence MP Chris Gulaptis welcomed the funding announcement for the Lower Clarence libraries with CEO of Yaegl Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation Billy Walker, Maclean Library Assistant Louise Tyrie, CVC Senior Library Officer Jane Kreis, CVC Mayor Jim Simmons and CVC Regional Librarian Kathryn Breward.

Clarence Valley Mayor Jim Simmons said Council was very excited to receive $275,000 funding to refurbish the three libraries that sit on Yaegl Country.

“Yaegl design elements will be incorporated into the upgrade of the buildings. They will also feature new shelving systems, improved technology along with a more comfortable layout,” Cr Simmons said.”

“To ensure the design acknowledges the traditional owners and creates a connection to Country we will be consulting with the Aboriginal community throughout the design phase of this project,” he added.”

Mr Gulaptis insisted libraries remained relevant and that they mattered – especially in regional communities.

“What you can read into this is that libraries aren’t just here to stay, we are making them bigger and better as we must for them to compete with all the digital entertainment most of us now stream into our homes,” Mr Gulaptis said.

“Public libraries provide a lot more than what you can download on your phone.

“This includes local history and current events, a social focus, a learners’ meeting place and the same information access to anyone who cares to join regardless of their income level,” Mr Gulaptis concluded.
