Police are probing the cause of a fire which ripped through businesses in the centre of a northern NSW town this morning. A section of the CBD has been closed as emergency services assess the damage.

Casino laundromat fire

Police are investigating the cause of a fierce fire which ripped through multiple businesses in Casino’s CBD early on Monday morning.

Athol and Lorraine’s laundromat and Mun Tien Chinese restaurant at a dual occupancy 112-114 Walker St address were engulfed by flames just before 3am.

The fire ignited about 2:40am, according to a NSW Police spokesman.

Fire and Rescue NSW assistant superintendent Guy Lightfoot said when emergency services arrived at the site they spotted a brick building up in flames.

He said crews worked from two sides to control and extinguish the fire.

The fire was under control shortly after 5.30am, but numerous “hotspots” were difficult to extinguish due to the collapsed roof and walls.

In a statement, NSW Police said the fire spread from the laundromat to the restaurant.

No one has been reported injured in the fire, but both buildings were destroyed.

Richmond Valley Council shut Walker St, from Canterbury St to Barker St on Monday morning, while emergency services were on the scene.

“Pedestrians and motorists are asked to follow all detours and signage around the closure,” a council statement read.

Police officers have established a crime scene and are investigating the fire.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
