FATHER and son surfing duo David and Garrett Parkes have had plenty to cheer about this week.

They are from Byron Bay with David Parkes just crowned the new world champion at the ISA World Open Kneeboard Titles in Tahiti.

He went up against competitors from 16 countries in open competition.

His son Garrett Parkes has been a standout in the Vans US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach California.

Parkes has made it to the fifth round of the competition which features the best surfers in the world.

He had to surf in trials at the weekend just to qualify for the event.

An 11.97 (out of a possible 20) was enough for him to finish second in his fourth round heat.

Parkes best score came in the first round with a 17.07.

Lennox Head surfers Adam Melling and Stu Kennedy were eliminated in the fourth round.

The competition is ongoing with Lennox Head's Tyler Wright to surf in the women's section.
