A ‘FASHION emergency’ two years ago inspired Byron Bay woman Amy Camilleri to embark on a career as a designer.

“I went to a party in Sydney and another girl was wearing the same outfit as me,” she said.

“I didn’t want that to happen again, so I decided I was going to make my own clothes.

“The only problem was that I had no idea how to sew.”

But that problem was solved with the creation of Lyloh’s Outfit in a Box – a sarong that can be used to create countless different outfits.

There are eight basic styles – including tops, skirts, shorts, maxi halter dresses, jumpsuits, boob tube dresses and pants – but Amy says she has seen plenty more.

She uses colourful fabrics, buckles, elastic beads, stretch belts and pins to make each outfit different.

“Outfit in a Box is just a starting platform for women to get really creative with what they’re wearing,” she said.

“It empowers women to create their own outfits.

“I often see girls come in wearing it in a way that I’ve never even thought of, and I’ve been doing it for two years.

“Once I wore mine to an awards night and people said to me, ‘oh I love your maxi dress’.”

Amy says that thanks to the feedback she’s received from the Byron Bay community, she will focus on developing the business this year.

“I’ve always wanted to do something in the fashion industry, but it’s really, really difficult to break through,” she said.

“I’m taking it a lot more seriously now. Last year was trial and error.

“I’m going to Los Angeles in September and I want to go to Europe next year.

“It’s been a pretty big risk, because no one else is doing anything else like this.

“But now that’s working in my favour.”

The biggest thrill for Amy is seeing women wearing Lyloh Outfit in a Box.

“If I go out at night and see girls wearing them out to dinner or for a night out, it’s just great,” she said.

“I still get excited about every sale.

“When a tourist buys one of my sarongs I say, ‘wow, you’re going to be wearing that in France’.

“One girl who bought one last year said she wore it in Morocco, all through the Middle East.

“Another wore hers for her engagement party.

“At a New Year’s Eve party I went to I saw three people wearing my sarongs.

“I still think it’s pretty amazing.”
