The closure of Target Country Goonellabah last year devastated our region, but the former space could soon find two new brands to fill the coveted spot.
Target Country Goonellabah in The Village Goonellabah was one of the 284 stores to close nationwide after Westfarmers decided to shut down underperforming stores in 2020.
Alongside Murwillumbah and Casino locations, the move was deemed “cruel” by MP Janelle Saffin.
Unlike other stores, it was not replaced by a Kmart Hub.
However, the forgotten space could soon find two new owners, with news The Reject Shop and Rivers will be moving in.
The Reject Shop GM Operations, Paul Calvert, revealed the team planned to open just in time for Christmas.
They already have one Lismore store, at Lismore Central.
“We know this community appreciates variety and now more than ever, Aussies are looking to save money on everyday essentials,” he said.
“Our incredible team are all really proud to be able to offer our shoppers with quality product for much less.”
A spokeswoman for the group added it was part of the company’s ongoing growth strategy and could “create opportunities for locals”.
“We don’t believe in running a temporary discount model, we believe in having everyday low prices that customers can trust to save them money,” Mr Calvert said.
“It’s imperative to us that our shoppers can rely on The Reject Shop to build their budget and shopping list with confidence.
“We’re really excited to be making our offering even more accessible to the local Goonellabah community.”
The company currently owns 350 stores nationwide, with more than 5300 employees.
The brand also recently expanded into the grocery field, with the introduction of the UK grocery brand, TESCO.
Rivers’ parent company, Mosaic Brands, was also contacted for comment but did not reply.
