A BURST water main is causing traffic havoc in East Lismore.

Ballina Rd at Clarice St is closed due to the incident.

The NSW Traffic Management Centre says local diversions are in place with motorists being re-directed via First Avenue, Avondale Avenue and Wyrallah Road before rejoining Ballina Road (Bruxner Highway).

The diversion is not suitable for B- doubles which are being diverted via Summerland Way via Grafton. Motorists are advised to allow additional travel time.

Lismore City Council confirmed the water main on Ballina Road had burst unexpectedly and should be repaired by the end of today.

The main burst around 9.10am and police and council officers have put in place traffic controls to divert motorists.

Telstra has been informed to check underground infrastructure in order for council to excavate and repair the pipe.

Council has informed around 12 nearby residents that water will be turned off for approximately five hours while the water main is repaired.

Council officers expect it will be repaired and traffic conditions will return to normal by close of business today.
