A Northern Rivers man who punched his partner in the face at a shopping centre bus stop has landed behind bars.

Brunswick Heads man Kyle Currie faced Lismore Local Court over videolink on Monday.

In October, the 21-year-old pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and stalking/intimidating following the attack at the Lismore Square Shopping Centre bus stop on the morning of August 17.

Brewster became angry at his partner in her late 20s at the Brewster St bus stop and struck her in the face.

The victim was left disorientated and bleeding from her mouth and nose after the cowardly domestic violence attack.

Police found her “bloody, bruised and swollen”, unable to open her eyes, court documents state. She was taken to Lismore Base Hospital.

Following the attack, the woman fled into the shopping centre’s car park to get help from security. Multiple triple-0 calls were made by witnesses.

Currie grabbed the woman and tried to carry her away from an escalator as she screamed for help, but she kicked and bit him in self-defence before running away.

Police arrested Currie soon after and he said: “Is she OK? I only punched her in the face once.”

Officers describe Currie in the documents as a “violent offender” who showed “no remorse”.

Magistrate Philip Stewart heard Currie suffered from schizophrenia and his upbringing was marred by domestic violence.

Currie previously told Magistrate Danielle Mansour he had “a baby on the way” and it was “due in March”.

Mr Stewart sentenced Currie to one year and nine months in prison, with a non-parole period of 10 months.

Currie is due to be released on parole on June 16 next year
