IN MAY 1968, Lismore City Council workers were beginning the laborious task of back-filling by hand around the pipeline replacing Browns Creek.
Large pipes were laid in the creek and covered-in to provide a carpark for the growing CBD.
The creek, named after settler Henry Johnson Brown, from England, was part of the natural drainage system for Lismore, running from the new Ballina cutting and through the town to Molesworth St, where it emptied into the main river system near the old police station.
The project was completed the following year, after being held up by wet weather.
Flood mitigation works have been completed in the years since, with flood levee walls and pumps installed.
The carpark continues to accommodate hundreds of cars every day.
