LENNOX HEAD is one step closer to getting a new surf club after Ballina Shire Council yesterday agreed to set aside $30,000 to get concept plans drawn up.

LENNOX HEAD is one step closer to getting a new surf club after Ballina Shire Council yesterday agreed to set aside $30,000 to get concept plans drawn up.

The present building, which is about 35 years old, is deteriorating and needs to be replaced.

Cr Peter Moore said it was time to start planning for the future of ‘one of the most active surf clubs in NSW’.

“To see it deteriorate to the state that it’s in now is a shame,” he said.

While all councillors agreed the club had passed its use-by date, some worried about where the funding for a new building would come from.

“This is a fundamental piece of infrastructure for Lennox Head,” Cr Sharon Cadwallader said.

“It’s something that we just have to find the money for.”

Mayor Phillip Silver suggested low-scale developments on council-owned land near the Lake Ainsworth Caravan Park could help to generate enough capital to fund the surf club.

Also at yesterday’s meeting the council agreed to go ahead with the fluoridation of Wardell’s water supply by approving the construction of a fluoridation dosing plant at Marom Creek.

Cr Robyn Hordern said they would disadvantage certain residents if they did not go ahead.

“I think it would be criminal to not give it to the Wardell community,” she said.

Cr Sue Meehan said fluoridating the water supply was something that ‘needs to happen’.

However, Cr Keith Johnson said he was not satisfied with the Review of Environmental Factors because it did not guarantee that the environment or constituents would not be harmed.

“The practical reality is that the buck stops with us,” he said.
