MORE soil will be removed from a fuel spill site south of Lismore after leftover contaminants were found to be leaking into a nearby creek.
A report in The Northern Star last week showed that a recent 15,000-litre fuel spill following a fatal tanker crash on the Bruxner Highway had not been sufficiently cleaned up by BP distributor Reliance Petroleum.
Lismore City Council conducted an inspection at the site yesterday which revealed further soil removal by Reliance was required.
“There is sheen on the water surface in parts of the water system that will continue for a time, but that is not a sign of high contamination,” Lismore City Council co-ordinator of compliance, Matt Kelly, said.
“There is minor soil staining at the crash site and that will be addressed through (Reliance Petroleum) going to respond.
“A boom was put in place by emergency services in the drain system and there is a brown congealed product on the water surface, but it isbeing collected at the boom and that will be scooped up.
“For 98 per cent of the system, they (Reliance petroleum) have done a good job. But at the end of the day the clean-up has to be effective, and if it hasn’t been theywill come back for a secondattempt.”
Mr Kelly said Lismore City Council served Reliance BP with a legal direction clean-up notice which requires Reliance to remediate the site within ‘stringent standards’.
Water and soil samples are being tested for contamination levels and further action will be decided when testresults are returned.
The NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water said it would monitor the situation.
“We will continue to provide technical advice to council as required to ensure the site is appropriately remediated,” a department spokeswoman said.
Reliance had not returned calls from The Northern Star by 5pm yesterday.
