LENNOX HEAD’S main supermarket will increase by a third of its size in an effort to provide a bigger and better range for customers and tourists.
Plans have been approved and work has started on the refurbishment of the Lennox Head IGA complex.
The newsagent will move to the former bakery site, and the supermarket will expand into the newsagent section.
The bakery will eventually become part of the supermarket.
The existing bottle shop will stay in the same place and will have its own entrance.
According to documents on Ballina Shire Council’s website, the renovations will cost about $200,000.
The IGA store manager said she was very excited about the changes.
“The IGA itself will be expanded,” she said.
“We’re 280 square metres at the moment and we’ll get 100 square metres extra.
“We’re increasing the size of the deli, putting in a new, in-store bakery and increasing the grocery section.
“The freezer and dairy sections will be doubled.”
In an attempt to reduce waiting times during the busy summer period, another cash register will be installed.
The store manager said the redevelopment of the IGA complex showed the owner’s commitment to the village and its residents.
“The town definitely needs this, especially with all the development that’s going on,” she said.
“And we just physically needed more space.
“We’ve outgrown the current shop.
“We’re hoping to have this all complete by mid-November – we want it to be ready for Christmas.
“The redevelopment is an investment in Lennox Head and the community.
“We will be able to employ more staff.
“It will also enable people to do their weekly shop here.”
The changes come right after the village pub had a major refurbishment.
