ALTHOUGH a man of few words, when Lismore City Council's Works Supervisor Harry Wilson speaks, people take notice.

That's because Harry has been in public works construction for 43 years and there's not a lot he hasn't seen, heard or had to fix.

"Anything unusual to other people isn't unusual to Harry because he's already been there and done that," said the council's works manager, Darren Patch.

On Thursday night Mr Wilson was presented with a Leadership Award from the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia for his unwavering commitment and dedication to his job.

The awards were presented at the annual IPWEA NSW Works Officers Conference in Coffs Harbour.

"I was very surprised… I wasn't expecting it. I knew nothing," Mr Wilson.

"There's obviously been a bit of behind-the-scenes work from staff to put my name in the hat so it's thanks to them really for the recognition."

Starting out as a private labourer and plant operator, some year later Harry joined Byron Shire Council where he stayed for 27 years before coming to work for Lismore City Council nine years ago as the Urban Works Supervisor.

"He has experience across all facets of government work - roads, waste, water and parks - and most recently he's overseen jobs including the major upgrades of the CBD block.

"Whenever there are major incidents or natural disasters Harry's s there to coordinate the troops to get the work done. It's a critical position," said Mr Patch, who nominated Mr Wilson for the award.

"It's his people management skills and his ability to get the best out of his team that truly sets him apart as a team leader. He can communicate effectively with people at all levels, from the mayor and the general manager to disgruntled members of the public.

Without a doubt, the people of Lismore are very fortunate to have someone like Harry looking after their infrastructure for them. When things get tough, he can be relied on every time to sort out a solution."

So according to the award winner, what makes a good leader?

"Be up front with everyone and keep everyone in the know," Harry said.

"Be honest and have patience."
