ATO offers Tax Help in Clarence Valley

NEED to lodge a tax return? You may be eligible for a free Tax help service on offer in Yamba, Maclean and Grafton.

IF you need to lodge a tax return and you earned less than $50,000 last financial year and you are otherwise eligible, then a free Tax help service is available to you in Yamba, Maclean and Grafton.

Tax Help in the Clarence Valley is a program run by the Australian Taxation Office in partnership with Clarence Valley Council and the New School of Arts.

Trained community volunteers provide a free and confidential service to help people complete their tax returns at tax time (from 1st July to 31st October). These volunteers are people from within the Clarence Valley community who give up their time each year. They are not Tax Office staff, but they receive training and support from the Tax Office.

Mayor, Richie Williamson said the free service was designed to help low income earners and had been running for nine years.

Generally, if you earned less than $50,000 in the last financial year, you will be eligible for Tax Help if none of the following situations applied to you:

  • you were employed as a contractor (for example a contract cleaner or taxi driver),
  • you were in business, including being a sole trader,
  • you sold shares or you sold an investment property,
  • you owned a rental property, you received royalties,
  • you received distributions from a trust other than a managed fund,
  • you received foreign income other than a foreign pension or annuity

Tax help is available in South Grafton ant the New school of Arts, in Yamba at Treelands Drive Community Centre and for the first time, in Maclean at the Branch Library.
