Update 1.05pm: A student pilot practising training manoeuvres got more than he bargained for this morning.

The pilot remained cool, calm and collected after an engine malfunction in the ultralight he was flying, forcing him to make an emergency landing at Tatham.

The pilot landed the plane in a paddock at Tatham, suffering no injuries, and sustaining little damage to the ultralight.

Bill Kiernan from the Northern Rivers Aero Club praised the pilot’s actions, saying he “did all the right things” to land the plane in an emergency.

“He did a very good job, he did as he was trained,” Mr Kiernan said.

He acknowledged it was a tough lesson for the trainee pilot, saying, “He got a live one”.

Mr Kiernan said the aircraft would be retrieved tomorrow, when they will assess why it malfunctioned.

A CASA spokesman, Peter Gibson, said the Jabiru ultralight had only the pilot on board when it crashed near Tatham Rd at Tatham.

NSW Ambulance was called just before 11am and assessed the pilot. They found he was uninjured and did not require transport to hospital.

Mr Gibson said the ultralight was registered with Recreational Aviation Australia.
