The Palace cinema in Byron Bay hoped to reopen its doors today at 1pm after sessions were cancelled due to an alleged break and enter early this morning.
Police said shortly after 4:20am today, Sunday, August 1, a 21-year-old man, wearing a grey jumper tied around his face, black cap, a black and red Puma tracksuit and white Asics runners, allegedly forced open one of the steel gates of the Palace Cinemas Byron Bay, and proceeded up the stairs to the main entrance of the cinema and looked inside.
Five minutes later, the man allegedly walked away from the cinema towards the Mexican Cantina restaurant where he picked up a concrete block, and carried it back to the cinema doors.
Police allege the man threw the concrete breeze block at the glass door of the cinema, shattering the glass and the concrete block, before leaving through the same broken door with a small white bin filled with food items.
He allegedly re-entered the cinema several times before walking to a shop undergoing refurbishment and pulling away one of the boards.
The man was allegedly trying to exit the cinema when confronted by security, who took hold of him and called police.
Police arrived on scene and located the accused with security. Police returned to the
cinema complex and located several pieces of broken brick at the front entrance to the
cinema and inside the premise.
Numerous blood droplets and smears were located near each broken window.
The male was placed under arrest and will be charged with break and enter.
He was in custody at Byron Bay Police Station.
Cinema manager Elijah Ayo said the first sessions of the day were cancelled to allow the forensics team to complete their investigation and to allow for broken glass to be replaced.
Screenings were expected to resume at 1pm.
