A woman who suffered chest injuries in a serious crash last night was forced to spend the night in a ravine with a paramedic until she could winched to safety.

Overnight at 9pm the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked to a serious single vehicle accident car down a 100m steep embankment at Cambridge Plateau 50kms west of Casino with a male and female injured.

NSW Ambulance Paramedics, Police and VRA Rescue had unsuccessfully attempted to access the car from above due to the loose rocks and vegetation and requested the helicopter to winch access the vehicle.

The male occupant did eventually make his way up to the road with minor injuries, the female was accessed by the Critical Care Paramedic who was winch inserted into the scene where he remained overnight with the female patient overnight as a night winch extraction was deemed to dangerous.

At first light this morning both the 25-year-old female and the Critical Care Paramedic were winched back into the helicopter and flown to Lismore Hospital in a stable condition with chest injuries.

Casino Rescue Squad – NSW Volunteer Rescue Association said they were called to the incident at 6.31pm Saturday night to a persons trapped crash in the Richmond Range National Park near Mallanganee.

“A large convoy of various emergency vehicles navigated the narrow dirt road and eventually located the point to which a vehicle had gone off the road,” the post read.

“The vehicle was approx. 100-120m down a very steep ravine with the ground highly unstable.

“Members from Casino VRA and Kyogle SES made their way down approximately a quarter of the way to set up lighting and formulate an extrication plan.

“After Rescue crews deemed it too unsafe for a vertical rescue a meeting was held with NSW Police and NSW Ambulance to call in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

“The helicopter lowered a paramedic to the scene who assessed the patient and the paramedic and patient will remain on scene overnight to be winched out in the morning when it is lighter and safer to do so.

“A second patient made their own way up the embankment somehow and was transported to hospital in a stable condition.

“Fantastic effort by all services onscene”.
