$83,000 cannabis seizure

MORE than eight kilograms of cannabis, with a street value of $83,000, has been seized from a property at Cawongla, 15 kilometres east of Kyogle.

MORE than eight kilograms of cannabis, with a street value of $83,000, has been seized from a property at Cawongla, 15 kilometres east of Kyogle.

Police from the Richmond Local Area Command went to the property at 3.30pm last Thursday to make inquiries about a malicious damage incident.

Crime manager Detective Inspector Greg Moore said those inquiries led police to discover a ‘large quantity’ of cannabis in a shed.

The police seized the drugs and a 31-year-old man was arrested.

The total weight of the drugs was about 8.3kg.

The man has been charged with several offences.

These include malicious damage; possession of a prohibited plant; cultivate a prohibited plant; and possession of an indictable quantity of cannabis.

He will appear in the Lismore Local Court on April 13.

In an unrelated drug case, Casino man James Doherty, 29, is facing charges of supplying 1.6kg of cannabis on April 5; supply of 4.8 grams of LSD; and supply of 4.9 grams of amphetamines.

With the matter mentioned in the Casino Local Court yesterday, Doherty is also charged with cultivation of seven cannabis plants.

His lawyer revealed Doherty was completing the MERIT treatment program for drug offenders with regard to a previous court matter.

Doherty was charged on Easter Monday after detectives from the Richmond Local Area Command and Casino police officers executed a search warrant at his Johnston Street home.

Det Insp Moore said the police would continue to target the supply and distribution of illicit drugs across the Northern Rivers.

“We will continue to investigate and make arrests in an attempt to interrupt the supply of these drugs,” he said.

“We must prevent the adverse impacts that illicit drugs can have on vulnerable people in our community.”
